UBM acquires Asian organiser AMB

ASIA – UBM has acquired the business and assets of AMB Exhibitions and AMB Events in Malaysia, Vietnam and the Phillipines on behalf of UBM Asia.

The acquired company organises five exhibitions in Malaysia and Vietnam, with four new events planned for this year including three in the Phillipines and one in Vietnem. The shows serve the water, livestock, energy and mechanical/electrical industries.

AMB’s two largest shows are AsiaWater and ASEAN M&E Expo, which together account for about two thirds of the company’s US$4m revenue in 2010.

Company founder Siow Kwang Vian will stay with the business as a consultant along with his team of 15 staff. AMB is based in Malaysia.

“The acquisition of AMB accelerates the expansion of UBM’s exhibition business into South Asia,” said UBM Asia president and chief executive Jimé Essink. “UBM has existing interests in the core industries served by AMB’s shows and complementary footprints in three of the region’s fastest growing economies – the Phillipines, Malaysia and Vietnam – as well as successful operations in Thailand and Singapore.”

UBM, which recently changed its name from United Business Media to simply UBM, reported an almost 70 per cent rise in profits from events in the first quarter of 2011.
