SMG selected to run McCormick Place

USA - The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) has approved the selection of private venue management firm SMG to run McCormick Place in Chicago.

The decision to go with private management represents a key step in implementing the historic reforms enacted by the General Assembly in 2010 to streamline operations and reduce costs for McCormick Place customers.

David Causton has been reappointed as general manager.

According to an MPEA statement, enabling MPEA to turn over operational responsibilities will reduce operational costs and improve the customer experience in the US's increasingly competitive convention and tradeshow industry.

SMG, which takes over from 1 July, has roots that stem from Chicago, and a history of venue management that includes 220 municipal and private venues in nine countries. The company operates 90 per cent of the publicly-owned exhibition space operated by private companies in North America and in addition to convention and exhibition centres, it manages arenas, stadiums, performing arts centers and theaters as well as specific-use venues such as equestrian centers.

As part of the new lease agreement, MPEA will work to develop a plan to maintain Navy Pier, home of McCormick Place, as a high-profile public attraction.
