Revolution opens doors for Egyptian industry

EGYPT - The Egyptian revolution that deposed president Hosni Mubarak may have a long-term positive effect on the country’s exhibition industry, according to the head of the Egypt Expo and Convention Authority (EECA).

Chairman Sherif Salem believes the exhibition industry in Egypt will play a more important role in the close future, “opening the country up for business and attract foreign activities”.

“The Constitution of Egypt is dissolved, and a new Constitution will be written for the approval of the people of Egypt,” he told EW. “Everybody agrees to try to reduce the unemployment and improve living conditions, and that can only be done with more business activities and income to the country. I expect, therefore, that Egypt will be even more open for business than before, because the country needs it. I expect that will be reflected in the legislation.”

EECA owns the two major venues in Egypt, the Cairo International Convention Centre and The Fair Ground, both situated in the capital under the newly-named umbrella, Cairo Expo City. Salem oversaw the plans to remodel the Fair Ground to include a 150,000sqm exhibition centre, 40,000sqm convention centre and 1,100 hotel rooms in two hotel towers. Construction will begin at the end of the year.
