Thai-Cambodia trade fair postponed by border clashes

CAMBODIA – The Thailand-Cambodia Trade Exhibition 2011 has been postponed due to clashes on the Thai-Cambodian border.

The fair, which is hoped bring around 300 exhibitors to Cambodian capital Phnom Penh from 17 to 20 February, will now be replaced with a smaller-scale trade fair. The originally planned Thailand Trade Exhibition is expected to take place in March this year.

Thai commerce minister Pornthiva Nakasai said on Tuesday that the aim of the fair is to strengthen and maintain good ties between the two countries. Tensions between the two kingdoms remain high after border clashes led to the displacement of 15,000 Thais from their homes near the border.

The Thai Exhibition Association last year predicted that space at exhibitions could rise by 10 per cent if political problems ceased.
