NSW Opposition leader pledges state bid for Olympics of the finance industry

AUSTRALIA - The power of the meetings industry appears to be figuring heavily in the campaigning for New South Wales' upcoming state elections.

Further to the news that the Opposition coalition has proposed a new exhibition and convention facility in Sydney’s Darling Harbour precinct, its leader Barry O'Farrell has pledged a state bid in 2015 for the city to host IMF/World Bank annual congress.

The global financial event of the year would attract 10,000 delegates to Sydney and be held at the proposed new convention centre, which could be completed in 2015.

The event, dubbed as the ‘Olympics of the finance industry’, is held outside of Washington DC in the US every three years and was last held in Istanbul in 2009. Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong and Madrid have all hosted the congress before.
