Indiana Convention Center jumps 16 places up after expansion

USA - The Indiana Convention Center has re-opened after its new expansion, moving up 16 places on the US convention centre list in the process.

The Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association now has the 16th largest convention centre in the US. The US$275m project is the fourth expansion in its 39-year history following the addition of the Lucas Oil stadium in 2008, which is used by the Indiana Colts American football team.

The centre now has 52,639sqm of contiguous exhibit space and 83 meeting rooms and ballroom spaces. The total exhibit space moves to 69,594sqm when combined with the floor space at Lucas Oil.

The expansion is part of a five-year strategic plan put in place by the city, which followed a feasibility study that showed a strong demand for a bigger venue. A spokesperson said “the association was turning down upwards of 150 bids per year because of space restrictions”.

The first convention to be held since the expansion will be Dealer Expo in February, which has been at the venue since 1998, and has signed on through 2016 due to the venue’s increased offering.
