Gun show goes ahead amid controversy

USA - The National Shooting Sports Foundation plans to go ahead with its Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOTS) in Las Vegas despite gun controversy in the wake of the Tucson shootings.

The four-day exhibition, organised by Reed Exhibitions, runs from 18 to 21 January at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

The 2010 show brought 58,400 people and 1,600 exhibitors. People under 16 years of age are not admitted to the show, and personal firearms are also not allowed.

On 8 January, a shooter opened fire in Tucson Arizona, shooting 19 people including Democratic US Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who is recovering from her wounds. In response to this, gun control activists have called for Congress to enforce stricter limitations on weapons not used for hunting.

Las Vegas recently hosted the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, which for the first time allowed a limited number of consumer visitors.
