Coex reveals G20 prep strategy

SOUTH KOREA - Previously classified information about preparation for the G20 Summit has been released by Seoul’s Coex exhibition and convention venue.

The Summit took place at Coex on 11 and 12 November last year and was the first G20 Summit to take place in Asia.

Preparation by Coex, which acted as co-PCO as well as venue for the event, included construction of the leaders’ summit hall, planning in-venue security and operating the media and broadcast centre. Security preparations included high-intensity physical drills and mass disaster-prevention equipment training.

The venue’s loading docks became the main secure entrance for the world leaders after undergoing a renovation and makeover. This allowed them to enter the venue without public exposure.

Registered participants included 33 heads of state and leaders of international organisations, and almost 15,000 diplomats, security personnel and members of the press. Around 30 per cent of Coex’s employees were appointed to a special task force team nearly a year before the summit itself.

The G20 Summit could provide a significant boost to South Korea’s exhibition business.
