Western Australia wins major natural gas event for 2016

The Perth Convention Bureau played a key role in securing the global liquefied natural gas conference and exhibition LNG18 for Western Australia in 2016.

The Bureau’s MD, Christine McLean, is currently in Houston, Texas where the decision to host the event in Perth was made by the LNG16 steering committee, a group that comprises representatives of the International Gas Union, the Gas Technology Institute and the International Institute of Refrigeration.

“We canvassed the opportunity to bid for LNG18 with the Australian Gas Industry Trust (AGIT) nearly two years ago,” said McLean. “We then worked with the AGIT and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association to develop the bid.

“This is a major international coup for Perth,” she added.

McLean said she hoped the State Government would fast-track expansion of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and new hotel infrastructure to ensure the city’s facilities would not be overstretched with the influx of around 4,000 LNG18 delegates.

The economic impact of LNG18 has been calculated at more than AUS$50m.
