Expansion of MCEC exhibition space revealed

AUSTRALIA - The Victorian state government has announced its commitment for the expansion of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).

The development is set to commence in 2012 and be completed by 2014.

The plan will extend the existing 30,000sqm Melbourne Exhibition Centre and 5,550sqm Melbourne Convention Centre’s event space by 12,000sqm. The new event space will include solar panels, a level of water harvesting and the provision of on demand natural light in the halls.

Car parking availability surrounding the MCEC will also be improved with a multi-storey car park adjacent to the new space.

“This will position MCEC at the top of Australia’s list with almost 50 per cent more exhibition space than any other Australian venue,” says MCEC’s chief executive, Leigh Harry. “Many large scale events with significant exhibition requirements will now be able to consider Melbourne as their destination.”

Harry says the expansion plans were a response to international demand for large scale exhibition and convention space requirements and business events.

“The extra space also enables growth for shows already hosted by MCEC, such as the International Motor Show, Good Food Show and the Gift Show,” he adds.
