Middle East jewellery fair beefs up security

UAE - Organisers of the Middle East Watch and Jewellery Exhibition at Expo Centre Sharjah have stepped up security following the gem theft from a similar Mumbai show.

Visitors will be subjected to body checks and bag scans, and the number of police inside the hall has also increased.

Emirates news website Emirates 24/7 quoted a police source as saying: “Security checks and surveillance have been beefed up to avoid any crimes in such a high-profile event. The number of theft cases and break-ins in Sharjah has been going up and the police and security officials are more vigilant now.”

The show, organised by Expo Centre Sharjah, runs from 28 September to 2 October.
