Activists speak out against Ottawa venue location

CANADA - Environmental groups are speaking out against Ottawa’s plans to construct an exhibition and conference venue near the city’s airport.

The Greenbelt Alliance of Canada’s Capital, representing 15 environmental and community organisations in and around the city, has claimed the city and the National Capital Commission (NCC) are trying to rush the US$40m project.

“It’s all about development,” said vice-chair of the alliance Sol Shuster to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. “It’s seen by some people at the NCC as business opportunities rather than protecting the greenbelt.”

According to Shuster, the planned building site sits on sensitive wetlands and construction could threaten local wildlife.
