Choosing the right hashtag  is important. If you have a livestream event in 2016, you have probably thought about a hashtag for it.

Using an event hashtag is important for the following reasons:

Listen – You can capture chatter and reactions from your audience.

Follow up You can delve deeper into questions people ask.

Broaden your message People don’t need to be in the room to gain insight from your event. You’ll most likely have delegates live tweeting information. If you’re smart, as the event organiser you’ll be the chief live tweeter, capturing every moment and giving people following the hashtag a running commentary of what’s happening.

Build a community – See who has been listening to and interacting with your event across social media.

How to pick a hashtag

Selecting the right hashtag is a simple process if you follow these fundamental rules:

Make it unique

Do a quick search on Twitter to make sure no one else has used that hashtag before. Using a wholly unique hashtag will make life easier when it comes to reporting and researching after the event.

Keep it simple

The shorter, the better. People should be able to quickly add it to a social post instead of having to copy it down or check spellings every time they tweet.

Make it relevant

This may seem obvious, but make sure it’s a variation of the name of your event and nothing too generic.

Read it

#NowThatchersDead or #NowThatChersDead. The need to combine words without spaces can get you into real trouble. Safe to say you should read, and re-read your hashtag before you use it to make sure it says what you want it to!

Top tip: Display the hashtag prominently at your event (it reminds people to use it).

BONUS TIP: Use the event hashtag in advance

Publicise the hashtag in advance of the event and get people using it. Then use it in all social communications – even use it in your bio section. Add it to your website, in all emails and marketing materials, including ticketing.

Reframed.tv syncs tweets to your livestream, increasing engagement, boosting sales and building a community around your event.
