London is a great hub for international events, says Lisa Hatswell, general manager, Unique Venues of London
London has long maintained a position at the forefront of business tourism, it’s a global hub with enduring appeal for exhibition bookers. The mix of the modern and historic give it that unique quality which attracts both domestic and international delegates, who flock to the capital on a daily basis.
The diverse nature of the capital is certainly reflected within the wide range of venues on offer to event organisers and PCOs. In addition to the purpose-built exhibition centres, there are a range of quirky, unusual venues which help ensure an engaging experience.
From intimate spaces for smaller showcases, like the Museum of the Order of St John and London Museum of Water and Steam, to the grandeur of the Royal Geographical Society and Guildhall, there’s something to cater for every requirement.
Often unfairly maligned, London still remains one of the most connected cities in the world, with a wealth of links traversing the city. Fast trains from Heathrow and Gatwick mean that international delegates can have a relatively hassle-free journey into town, whilst the sophisticated system of tubes and bus routes open up a world of opportunity to the ambitious exhibition organiser.
For example, you might hold your event at one of the major exhibition centres and then transport delegates across town to Kensington’s Science Museum, Westminster’s Banqueting House or The City’s Gibson Hall for a sparkling reception or sumptuous dinner.
‘Extra-curricular’ activities should not be overlooked either. They say ‘if you’re tired of London, you’re tired of life’ and, as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, the opportunity for entertainment is around every corner.
The sheer wealth of museums, theatres, concert halls and landmarks mean there is plenty to do post-event, from world-famous collections at the National Gallery, Tate Britain and Royal Academy of Arts, contemporary greats at Tate Modern and Saatchi Gallery through to renowned institutions of performance such as the Royal Opera House, National Theatre and LSO St. Luke’s.
With so much going on, it’s not hard to see why London should be at the top of the list for anyone looking to hold an overseas event. The sheer variety of venues, hospitality and culture offer a winning combination, guaranteed to add value to any exhibition or expo.
